Excessive Lead Paint Levels Force the Recall of Four Toy Products in Dec. ‘08

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has initiated, with the cooperation of manufacturers, the voluntary recall of the following four toy products because they contain components with excessive amounts of lead, which violate federal lead paint standards.

  • Groovy Fashions Sassy Jammies Doll Clothing Sets
  • “Dinosaur Epoch” Toy Dinosaurs
  • Army Figures
  • Calypso Steel Drums

In all four circumstances, no incidents have yet been reported by consumers, according to the CPSC, which instructs consumers to immediately take the recalled products away from children. Instructions regarding return policies are contained within the following product information descriptions.

Groovy Fashions Sassy Jammies Doll Clothing Sets are manufactured by the Manhattan Group, Minneapolis. The hazard results from the surface paints on the pajama pants. The recalled doll clothing set features a two-piece pajama set, eye mask, and slippers. The pajama top is pink satin and the pants are dark brown with multiple-colored flowers printed on them.

Consumers should return the toys through the purchase method that they used - mail order, internet, or specialty gift store - for a full refund or store credit. The toys were sold between January 2008 and October 2008 for about $12. The company can be reached at: 800-514-1345 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday; or at the company’s website: www.manhattantoy.com.

“Dinosaur Epoch” Toy Dinosaurs are imported by Xtreme Toy Zone, Los Angeles. The hazard results from the surface paint on the toy dinosaurs. The recalled toys are battery-operated dinosaurs that move and make sounds. The recall includes the orange-colored “Dinosaur Brachiosaurus” (model #1033), and the green, yellow, and orange-colored “Dinosaur Carnotaurus” (model #1030). The model number can be located on the toys’ battery cover.

The company will either refund or allow for an exchange of the products. The toys were sold from the company’s website between May 2008 and October 2008 for between $15 and $20. Xtreme can be contacted: collect at 213-237-9983 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday; or at the company’s website: www.xtremetoyzone.com.

Army Figures are imported by OKK Trading, Los Angesles. The hazard results from the paint on the face of the figures. The recall involves the 7 ½ inch tall plastic toy Army figures. The figures are dressed in Army fatigues and have guns.

The company will either provide a full refund or replacement toy. The toys were sold either through dollar-type retailers or the company’s website at www.okktoys.com between June 2008 and September 2008. OKK can be contacted at: 877-655-8697 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday; or at the company’s website: www.okktoys.com.

Calypso Steel Drums are manufactured by Woodstock Percussion Inc., Shokan, N.Y. The hazard results from the surface paint on the drum. The recalled steel drum is made of steel and comes with two wooden drum sticks and a wooden stand. The sides of the drum are painted red. The drum pan is painted black with silver markings to show the location of notes. Each rim is stamped with a #5 or #6. Not all drums stamped with a #5 are affected by this recall.

If the product is returned, Woodstock will replace the drum and give a $5 credit or payment. The toys were sold between December 2006 and December 2007 from various vendors for between $50 and $100. The company can be contacted through its: toll free number at 866-543-2848 anytime; email at safety@chimes.com; or website at www.woodstockpercussion.com.
