LOS ANGELES- As Hilary Orr’s two daughters got older, they became increasing less inclined to want to use natural or organic products. “They were always attracted to the really fun packaging from products that had all of these awful ingredients in them,” said Ms. Orr, who got together with her longtime friend, Darcy McMahon, to create Sparklehearts Co., a company with natural and organic products designed for kid appeal.

“There was nothing out there on the market that I could find that was fun and hip for the girls, and that was also natural and organic,” added Ms. Orr, who with Ms. McMahon went on a two-year journey of product development and culminated with the debut of Sparklehearts last month at the Natural Expo West tradeshow.

“We got a really great reaction. People really loved our products,” said Ms. Orr, talking about the company’s five product lines which consist of a shampoo, conditioner, hair detangler, body wash, and body lotion.

“With the Shine Shampoo, we wanted to put something a little different in, so we added a little pansy extract, which is a natural sun protectant. We kind of did that with all of our products, but for the shampoo I would like to add that it makes a really great lather, which is unlike a lot of other natural shampoos,” said Ms. Orr.

Sparklehearts also features Rainbow Soft Conditioner which has been designed to “repair damage, restore shine, bounce, and beauty,” according to Ms. Orr. The product contains ingredients including: Vitamin B5, Shea butter, jojoba, and wheat protein.

Peace Out No Knots Hair Detangler contains ingredients including: green tea and sage extracts, which are said to prevent damage and repair hair; nettle extract, which is said to minimize oily build-up and dandruff; and willow bark, which is said to increase the shine of hair.

The Bubbling Bloom Body Wash’s ingredient list includes almond protein, coconut, and primrose, all said to act as moisturizers for the skin.

Sparklehearts’ Sweet Hearts Sparkly Body Lotion has been formulated using ingredients including: sesame oil, which is said to have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties; murumuru butter and almond oil, which are said to improve complexion; and natural mica sparkles to add a subtle shimmer to the skin.

As a member of the National Products Association, Sparklehearts conforms all its product formulating standards to those of the association, according to Ms. Orr, added that the company is currently awaiting approval to be able to put the NPA’s quality standard seal on its packaging. Ms. Orr also wants it known that “our bottles are all post consumer recycled materials. It was very important for us to do that with our packaging.”

All of the company’s products are vegan and never tested on animals, according to Ms. Orr, who added that there are no dyes in the products. “It was also important for us to have no artificial fragrances in there, so our fragrances are all essential oils. They are very sweet smelling. A lot of people say the fragrances smell like candy.”

Though a newly budding company, Sparklehearts is already developing product expansion plans. “Lip gloss is on it’s way. This summer. It will be a couple of different shades. It will be very shimmery. Our lip gloss will obviously be petroleum free and it’s going to be 70 percent organic,” said Ms. Orr. The company operates as an online retailer at sparklehearts.com, and is looking for brick-and-mortar retailers to affiliate with.
